Randy Couture wants to be James Toney's first test in MMA

Originally posted by Anton Gurevich on March 4, 2010, 06:11 AM CDT

Legendary UFC Hall of Famer Randy "The Natural" Couture (18-10 MMA record) expressed his desire to welcome James Toney to the world of Mixed Martial Arts.

Speaking via his Twitter account, Couture revealed that he hopes to be the first against the 41 year old James "Lights Out" Toney, who was finally awarded a UFC contract just one day ago. Toney is currently training under Rampage Jackson's former trainer, Juanito Ibarra, and is expected to make his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut sometime in June.

  • SilvaOfTheStreets I don't want Randy fighting Toney for the fact that even tho its a guarentee'd win for MMA it's going to be BORING... I'd much rather see some1 like Dos Santos, who can give him the works standing for a little bit and then drop him and show the difference from MMA and Boxing... Toney's prime he couldn't be outboxed But I think because Dos Santos throws his hands feet and knees so well and has alot younger limbs that will without a doubt be faster I think he could made Toney look like a joke on his feet as well... reach will be close or favor Dos Santos, Speed Dos Santos, power will be close but I kno Toney's lost a lil something off his hand power and Dos Santos will definately make sure to use them knees and Toney will have nothing for him. • UrHype Being controller, taken down and beaten would be a nice fat slice of humble pie & Randy and Dana will most likey agree.
Also, Dana can cut him after one loss if he really wants to.
Just money to Dana nothing more.

  • cranestyle Ha! I figured as much. Everybody was predicting it would be Kimbo, but at Tooney's age, I don't think the UFC will be starting him out with anything other than a top contender.

The last thing the UFC wants is for a boxer to make MMA look weak in comparison. So no tomato cans for Mr. Lights Out.

  • SumHo Actually, I think Cro Cop would be an interesting match-up. Why? Because Cro would be willing to stand with him and he would throw lots of kicks his way and we would see what he could do with them, if anything but go down. It wouldnt be an instant take down and ground and pound or submit. but if he were totally losing the stand up war, he could always take him to the ground and see what happens there. Cro Cop could use another interesting fight on his resume since he has not been starling in some of his most recent outings. And it would be reminiscent of some of his K-1 fights, like against Bob Sapp. Reply 2 years ago

  • Accyfist Alright I confess, I was very bored last night as my wife watched a crappy TV drama so I wrote an inflamatory comment to see if anyone took the bait, but it seems people only get worked up by the repetitive old UK vs US thing. Not only did nobody really get worked up but some people even took my comment seriously!
Really Toney would have no more than a flash KO chance which is about 1 in 100 otherwise Handy'll school him in the arts of will imposition, taking him out of his game and other such facets to his game that we've come to love about Randy.

  • STIX Here your again comonson and STILL RETARDED. Randy will put him in the fence and give Toney a lesson in dirty boxing. Then take him down and beat his ass... If Toney wants more than one fight in the UFC they better give him a lesser fichter than Randy Couture. Reply 2 years ago

  • ston3pony Randy would stomp him unmercifully. Toney can't cope with Randy's dirty-boxing, and it would be absolutely effortless for Randy to take him down. Toney's only chance would be to run his ass off and try to land punches from the furthest possible range. Reply 2 years ago

  • ston3pony I don't think Randy would even need to fake a punch. Boxers have a bad stance for MMA, feet too close together, too straight up in posture. How often does Randy throw leg kicks? I think he could win the fight on leg kicks alone. Reply 2 years ago

  • GracieHunter0718 They let him in because he is a good fighter. I don't think anyone would dispute that.

If he was to fight Cro-Cop then Mirko would keep him at a distance, and throw some mean kicks.
