GSP talks scientific training methods, the interim title and Silva vs. Sonnen II

"All of the training that I do now, it's based on scientific experiment. They did it during the Communist Bloc in USSR. Back then, if you remember, they had unlimited resources and budget because the USSR wanted to prove the supremacy of Communist. So, what they did, they wanted to build up the best athletes. All the results of the experiments that they've done, that's what I do. It's all based on that. They don't lift weights because it messes up their joints, so they do different kinds of workouts. It's about stability and mobility on the joints and the core.

The question is not if Chael Sonnen will beat Anderson Silva, I believe he has the perfect style to do it. The only problem is, his last fight with Michael Bisping, he was coming pretty straight, and if he does that with Anderson Silva, he will run into punches. So, I think if he can move standing up without getting hit and find a way to close the distance bring the fight to the ground, he's got a very good chance to win. The thing is not really if he's going to win or not, but how he's going to get out of Brazil after that?"

  • godsofwararise Besides various training regimes the 'experiments' conducted by the USSR in the 60's and 70's also consisted of pumping their athletes full of steroids. You'll notice that as Olympic drug testing became more strict Soviet medal hauls began to dry up. Can't accuse Georges of abusing PEDs until he actually gets caught but this crap about USSR training methods hardly inspires confidence. Reply 3 months ago

  • flashbjj I have heard him talk about this before he does lift weights but only for marketing reasons as products want to put there name to the guy who looks the best plus its so that he can do things like rush fit and people will look at him and think i want that although when hes in camp he will not lift he believes its much better to get your strength and conditioning from a range of other things Reply 3 months ago

  • MMAfan87 They didn't lift weights because Steroids destroy your ligaments your muscle mass increases but your joints don’t keep up with the growth. It’s like slapping a big ass supercharger on an engine you didn’t rebuild and reinforce the internals first. You go fast for a minute but you’ll eventually blow your engine.   • mmagym I imagine he will do alot of plyometic training!
    burpees, iso press ups, iso squat jumps ect build quality explosive muscle. Also pull ups and one legged squats build massive muscle.
    More funtional than traditional weight lifting. Plus he fights at 170 lbs he is not exactly huge.
