First Signs of the UFC moving to Pay Per View in the UK

Originally posted by Macafier on September 8, 2010, 03:17 PM CDT

The UFC took their first step towards UK fans having to pay a premium at 3am on fight nights to watch the promotions programming after they switched the twelfth season of “The Ultimate Fighter” to Sky Sports.

It was brought to my attention today by a loyal fan that the switch had been made official on the promotions schedule of events, meaning thousands of fans on FreeView are set to miss out this time around. In previous years the reality show has gone out on either Setanta Sports or more recently ESPN, as well as featuring on Five US.

With Sky Sports having their own Pay-Per-View facility, fans in the UK should brace themselves for further disappointment down the road when it comes to the major events in the U.S., as it appears they’ll soon have to make a further contribution to the global dominance of Dana White and his merry bunch of men.

  • Joey_Santosus Well others pay for the live events.... Paying for TUF tho? Thats strange. Is it a PPV type deal, or is it premium channel like Showtime etc? Reply 1 year ago

  • mmauk i'll do my best to explain how things work here and explain why i'd be shocked if the UFC was on PPV anytime soon.
In the UK we have satellite and cable providers Skysports is the most lucrative sports package to buy in the UK either on cable i.e Virgin Media for us or SKY(biggest in the uk) which is the satellite company that owns Skysports. PPV's like Wresltemania are added to your monthly fee that you pay for skysports channels 1,2,3,4. it's about 25 dollars a month for Skysports alone that doesn't include basic channels that show stuff like 24 and Law and Order or PPV.
Boxing is on PPV in the UK for the biggest fights ONLY with UK fighters in fact only 2 David Haye and Amir Khan neither Manyy Pac or Mayweathers last fights were on PPV they were on the regular Skysports channel and their both more known and bigger than any UFC star in the UK by some distance actually although the UFC brand might ring a few bells but it's referred to as cage fighting rarely called MMA and the WWE is on PPV(not Raw or Smackdown their on the regular Skysports channel).
While i'll concur that this is a big step to PPV for UK fans there's still a long way to go bare in mind the WWE has been on PPV in the UK for the big shows since i was a baby and i'm 23 now. Boxing is still bigger than MMA and there's no Boxing v MMA debate over here. Also skysports have a news channel which is HUGE over here they even show news on Water Sports but have never shown U.S MMA they might have shown cage rage back in the day but don't quote me on that

  • mmauk Oh ye TUF will be on the regular Skysports channel. The UFC is currently on the UK version of ESPN which is about 12 dollars a month. ESPN's biggest draw to that channel is soccer thier lucky SKY are not allowed to have all the UK soccer games by law or ESPN would still be a free channel over here. Reply 1 year ago

  • azzkika 3AM people are either doing chemicals or snoozing or shagging. In UK very few will stay up til 3AM pay DW PPV rate knowing he pocketing most the money and treating some fighters very poorly, when we can do our chemicals or snooze or whatever we usually do at 3AM on a Sunday morning and watch the fights for free online via a plethora of sites which host links. • azzkika I would add, if DW really wanted to make money on PPV in UK, he must hold the events earlier in the day. I personally would like to see an outdoors event in the baking sun live at 10pm GMT. Reply 1 year ago

  • azzkika Ok on a clear sunny day. I like the outside events. Don't know why. Maybe it's a throw back to roman gladiators or something, but I much prefer it. Reply 1 year ago
