Fedor Emelianenko: I became a thorn in UFC's side; WAMMA Heavyweight Title will be on the line against Werdum

Originally posted by Anton Gurevich on June 22, 2010, 10:21 AM CDT

Speaking to M-1 Global's mixfight.ru, MMA icon Fedor Emelianenko declared that he became 'a thorn on UFC's side', blaming Dana White's promotion for the lack of respect towards their fighters. Despite having some harsh words, "The Last Emperor" revealed that the negotiations with The Ultimate Fighting Championship are still in process, under the patronage of M-1 boss Vadim Finkelstein.

Here is a translation of Fedor's interview, speaking about the UFC:

What do you think about Alistair Overeem’s victory over Brett Rogers?
I did not see that fight, like the whole Strikeforce’s May tournament. I have several fighters who interest me, and I am following their fights during the year.

... and who are these fighters?
Randy Couture interests me, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Shogun Rua. I also like UFC’s young fighters Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos… I think they are a very talented guys.

But all these fighters compete in the UFC, a promotion we have already lost our hope to see you fighting for. Vadim Finkelstein stated a couple of days ago that if you signed a contract with the UFC a couple of years ago, you would not exist as a sportsman today. Do you feel that it could’ve really happened to you?

I don’t think so. UFC is a money making machine. The most important thing for this organization is a brand and it’s marketing. They have a couple of good fighters and there are also some very good champions; but they are trying to keep everyone at the same level. The most important thing for them is the promotion, not the fighters. I think that they lack a respect for their fighters. As for me, I became a thorn in their side.

We are constantly negotiating, but only during recent time the Americans began to show some respect. The dialogue between us is completely different right now. They are more interested in our opinion.

The dialogue with the UFC will continue?

All I can say is that Vadim Finkelstein is doing well in handling the situation.

Meanwhile, M-1 Global Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan revealed to Ariel Helwani's MMA Hour that Fedor's WAMMA Heavyweight title will be on the line against Werdum, despite Strikeforce declaring that it will be a non-title contest. The fight against Vai Cavalo Fabricio Werdum will take place this Saturday, at the HP Pavilion Center in San Jose, California. Fedor Emelianenko is currently 31-1 in his Mixed Martial Arts career, competing since the year 2000.

  • Spyridon The more Fedor and Dana White talk lately, the more I get the feeling they struck some sort of deal on the down-low and cant talk about it yet with the Strikeforce fight coming up. I mean, look at what Fedor said in this - he mentions the only fighters hes following is UFC and that they are "finally listening". Plus Dana White said hes "given up" - DW is KNOWN for misleading ppl after doing a big deal for the surprise-hype factor. Hes not the type of person to talk about giving up either.

Plus he sort of let the cat out of the bag a bit - sayin Vadim is handling the situation nicely - does that really sound like the UFC has "given up on him"???

I've said it before, I could be wrong, but the more Fedor and Dana White talk in the way they are talking... its becoming more suspicious.

How often have you seen Fedor talk badly about anyone before the last few days?

    Question: Who am I?
Answer: The guy that gets my followers to believe anything that I or my managment (which i own part of) say.
Just thought i would point out the web of contradicting statement Fedor/M1 has come out with, just saying don't put all the blame on Dana White for not getting the deal done.

I hope we see Fedor in the UFC but all this UFC not being respectful that what stop making a deal is bull. Dana say's Fedor doesn't want to fight the best I say Fedor's management don't want him in the UFC Reply 1 year ago

  • ABCTeam Dana, not Fedor shuld get disrespect. Look what he did to Randy when Randy wanted to fight Fedor.

Remember he told everybdoy in the UFC that if they became part of the EA Sports game, they would never fight in the UFC.

  • Daniel_Cassidy During Couture's brief hiatus from UFC, when he left to go fight Fedor, Randy sold his video game image rights to EA. He was a free agent at this stage. this is why he is in their game. at the time a few years ago, EA were interested in making an MMA and bought these rights and now refuse to sell them to UFC, meaning Randy will never be in a UFC game. • a222g Dana was just blowing smoke when he said that anyone that signs with EA will never fight in the UFC. He just didn't want EA's game to be sucessful. Do you really think if Jake Shields, or Musassi or any other top fighter strikeforce develops the UFC wouldnt gladly offer them a deal once their contracts where up. UFC having all of strikeforces best fighters is more important than a statement Dana said over a year ago. UFC makes buisness decisions not personal vendettas. Reply 1 year ago

  • FedorsNuts He stood in front of the PRIDE community a swore he would make PRIDE even bigger and stronger than before too. About a month later he told a journo, that yes, PRIDE would remain - but all their fighters were going to the UFC!

Years later and cue the japanese mafia angle...

Dana is such a fag and anyone who remember him when he had hair and spoke like a shy, skinny little girl knows he's a fag. He even lies about his boxing stuff - he was a friggin jazzersize instructor ffs...

  • japanegro23 Exactly. Dana just says stuff. But.... he has no blame in getting a Fedor deal done? I'm sure they just can't agree to terms. If Dana doesn't want to budge, why does Fedor and his management have to. It happens in all sports and in everyday business. If he is happy with the terms and money more in SF than with the UFC, let that be. Sorry a222g. This is more of a response to your statement near the top but you left it open with the blowing smoke comment here. Reply 1 year ago

  • StickinUrChick Also, the reason Dana was so adamant about not allowing fighters to be a part of the EA game was because when the UFC was looking to get their game rolling, EA scoffed at the idea and was quoted saying some less than encouraging things about the idea of a successful MMA game. Then, just as u would expect from EA, as soon as they saw the anticipation and success of the game, they announced their intentions to release an MMA game.... I dislike EA for the most part... They are like the Wal-Mart or McDonalds of the gaming world. I was never a very big Madden NFL fan, I always preferred the 2K games, published by Sega. Well as soon as the 2K games started to out-sell and surpass Madden's game-play and visual quality... What did they do? Used their bank-roll to purchase exclusive rights to the NFL.. Meaning absolutely no other company could use ANYTHING related to the NFL in their games... Wow, any idea how expensive that must have been? Luckily, Madden stole a lot of NFL 2K's concepts, which made their game more tolerable... Reply 1 year ago

  • CageRage64 Funny you mention EA games.....

I just have to say that as HUGE football fan and gameplayer, I think that NFL 2K5 was one of the best football video games to ever come out. Madden 10 was a miserable game in my opinion with more glitches and annoying little details to count. I can only hope that they remedied some of it on Madden 11, but I hear you loud and clear.

  • IChokePeople The blame rests squarely on the UFC for not signing Fedor. He is spot on when he says that they do not treat the fighters right. Dana cuts guys all the time for not being popular or because he has milked them as much as he wants to. I also don't particularly care if Fedor fights in the UFC. There is more competition there for him but not better. With the possible exception of LHW, all of the Strikeforce champions are on a competitive level with their UFC counterparts. Gilbert Melendez V Frankie Edgar OR BJ Penn = great fight, Nick Diaz V GSP = great fight, Jake Shields V Anderson Silva = either a quick KO OR a very technical wrestling tutorial but is a competitive fight, Alistair Overeem V Lesner OR Carwin = great fight. Personally, I think that Shogun would DESTROY King Mo, but he might lose to superior wrestling. If Mousassi retakes the LHW title then IMHO, Gegard Mousassi V Shogun also = great fight. • IChokePeople Yeah, I'm not necessarily picking winners just pointing out that there is no real disparity in the level of competition in the two orgs. I do think that Melendez could beat BJ more than 1 out of 10 but him and Edgar are a closer match both skill wise and stylistically and I don't think Melendez would beat BJ more than 4 out of 10. Depending on how Edgar V Penn II goes I may be willing to revise my opinion though. Reply 1 year ago

  • symmetricon The UFC just like any company, it is all about money, but this is necessary to pay the employees well- so to say the UFC doesnt care about the fighters has no merit because their fighters are the best payed and most popular. M-Global's events are a joke and there fighters make squat besides Fedor. Reply 1 year ago

  • johnedge I think the UFC needs to hire a Russian translator. I think during the negotiations there has to be some lost translation. Recently, his translator admitted he didn't mention something. I think we just have to wait after the Werdum fight and the next fight to really find out. Reply 1 year ago

  • ston3pony Their lack of respect? That's funny considering how many fighters have openly declared Strikeforce to be an unprofessional joke where fighters sit back after a loss waiting hours for medical attention.

This talk will go on until Fedor retires. The best fighters will continue competing without him.
