Dana White: James Toney is not Canseco or Herschel Walker

Long saga came to it's end on Wednesday, as the multi-time Boxing Champion Toney revealed that he signed finally signed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. UFC President Dana White stated in his interview for the Yahoo Sports writer Kevin Iole that he will not do a "freakshow" out of James Toney's spell in the UFC, revealing that he considers "Lights Out" a real fighter, unlike Jose Canseco and Herschel Walker:

"I like James Toney. He’s one of the greatest boxers ever. I have tremendous respect for him. He said he wanted to fight in the UFC and I was interested. Now he’s here and I have to figure out what to do with him. What we won’t do is make a freak show out of it. I’d be the first to scream if someone else did that, so I’m not going to do it.

I don’t want this to be seen as a joke, and it’s not like Herschel Walker or Canseco or any of those guys. James Toney is a fighter. The worst thing anyone can ever say to me is that they were watching one of my fights and they changed the channel. That’s why I’ll never put [expletive] fights on."

Current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar faced a toughest challenge possible in his Octagon debut, when the promotion decided to book him agains the former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir at UFC 81. Mixed Martial Arts fans around the world will have to wait for the announcement of who will be James Toney's first opponent in the UFC, as Dana White revealed that he still "haven’t thought it out".

Murdoc James toney has awesome hands and it would suck if he knocked out a good u.f.c fighter cause toney would never shut up about it. Gilbert ivel or Todd duffee? ClosetCasey I still love the UFC, but I'm a little concerned about the direction these MMA promoters are taking. It's remotely entertaining to see Jose Canseco, and old washed up boxers and football players get their asses beat, but it only goes so far. They're turning the sport into a joke. friendlyfoe This is where I just start to hate Dana White....even though I am a big UFC fan, White just does/say these kind of things that conflict with his other actions. Call out everyone that not in the UFC a "circus show" but when they are in the UFC -- there's an exception. i hope Toney gets thrown in with someone really skilled to show him what MMA is all about. UndefeatedOfWest When someone kicks you, you step in and throw punches or check the kicks. I guess most likely toney is going to throw punches (would be a waste if he didn't, besides more effective anyways) and then all he has to do is work on his takedown defense. Then he doesn't have to worry about ground game. Toney can generate enough power from the clinch to knock someone out easily due to the smaller gloves in mma.

I feel like everyone is having him lose for the wrong reasons. What might end up defeating him is the cardio war that happens in the cage. Reply 2 years ago
