Alistair Overeem: I'm motivated to become the new UFC Heavyweight Champion

Originally posted by Anton Gurevich on December 31, 2011, 06:36 AM CDT

Fresh off his victory over Brock Lesnar in the main event of UFC 141 in Las Vegas, Nevada, Alistair "The Demolition Man" Overeem shared his point of view on what went inside the Octagon at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Overeem revealed he was surprised by Brock Lesnar's reach, but still knew exactly what he has to do in order to win the fight. The Reem also related to his next bout with the reigning UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos, claiming that he's extremely motivated to take the belt away from the Brazilian.

  • BruceLee "I like the UFC. Everything is taken care of A-Z. They treat me well." Fighter insurance, medicals and medical care. Base salaries and bonuses. Expectations of reasonably responsible behavior from the fighters.

It's time for the nay-sayers to accept that the UFC has done a lot of good for MMA and fighters. Dana is not perfect but with the Fertitta's watching over him he has done a lot of good.

  • David Saucier CC said they treated him like a king, I know Dana has even paid for operations for some trainers kids, Zuffa goes way above the call of duty all the other orgs just use these fighters, and some dont even pay them whats promised if nothing at all. Reply 4 months ago

  • Krogan Well its good to be the king, unfortunately the vast majority of the fighters still get paid absolutely peanuts. Reply 4 months ago

  • BobTheBuilder I like him, and I think he's our next champ, but I think he loses to Shane or Cain. Tbh I'd like to see him fight Cheick Kongo... odds are Reem would win but Cheick's the only heavyweight who's remotely close to Reem when it comes to technical striking ability... I think it'd be good, and I'm ready to see Cheick have another exciting fight. Reply 4 months ago

  • MMAMachine @Bob

Don't let these overzealous little fanboys talk down to you. It's like this Overeem vs. Lesnar fight was the first time they've ever seen Alistair fight or something.

Truth is, Overeem vs. Kongo would, indeed, be a fun fight to watch. Even though, like you said, Kongo isn't very likely to win.

As for James saying, "Cain did not dominate Brock the way that Reem did." That's odd, because as I recall, Cain defeated Lesnar without taking any damage at all, while Overeem needed stitches in his head from a single Lesnar jab.

  • BobTheBuilder I could see him beating Shane on the right day, but Cain would be, BY FAR, the best wrestler that he's ever fought. Cain could hang with him in standing and probably take him down at will. I'd bet money on Cain in that fight. If they offered Cheick Kongo a fight with Alistair tomorrow, he would absolutely take it. I really don't want to miss his fight with Mark Hunt though, that's gona be gnarly. Admittedly, I'm a Kongo fan. Reply 4 months ago

  • BobTheBuilder I hope I'm wrong, because I much prefer Alistair to Cain, and I'll be surprised if we don't see Cain fight for the title again within a year or two. Reply 4 months ago

  • mrdrahota If he does end up wearing UFC gold, it will time to pace him amongst the all-time greats with 4 major cobat sports titles to is name.I think Alistair definitely seems like a cool guy, seemingly down-to-earth for a man of his stature and accomplishments. He always talks to the media and gives good interviews. His next fight should be an absolute war, 2012 is starting off to be an explosive year for MMA worldwide. Reply 4 months ago

  • IChokePeople His game plan will be the same as it was in his K-1 fights. He will stay covered and pick his shots. The only difference is that he will be waiting for the take down when JDS gets frustrated on the feet. Reply 4 months ago

  • Warheadchief JDS is set up to lose. No way, no how will he go strike for strike with Overeem. I bet you my sister that if JDS entered K1 he would be taken out in the first fight.

JDS loves that uppercut, he stands ready to throw it all times. Train to counter or avoid that and its over.

  • gmb88 JDS probably would struggle in K1 but he's not gonna fight him in K1 they're gonna fight in MMA and JDS' skills in MMA striking are gonna cause Reem major problems, plus there is the mystery of JDS' ground game, he could be a beast on the ground and want to take Reem down so just training for an uppercut but b very unwise and i'm sure Reem has enough experience not to do that. It should b a good fight though but i'm edging towards JDS by KO Reply 4 months ago

  • IChokePeople When the fight hit the ground with Carwin, JDS ended up being choked pretty quickly. The bell saved him that time. Against Overeem he will not be the better striker and when it hits the ground he won't be up against a wrestler with okay subs, he will be up against an Abu Dhabi champion. Overeem takes that fight no matter where it goes. JDS's only chance is a puncher's chance IMHO. Reply 4 months ago
